I have a mixed relationship with stripes. Stripes can be hard to incorporate in your wardrobe. At least that is the story for me. After learning how to style stripes for my body type, it became easier to imagine and accept how it would look on me. Now the history of stripes in fashion, is quite fascinating.
In the Middle Ages, stripes were associated with negative connotations. Prisoners and clowns were depicted in striped clothing. Not only until the 19th century did stripes become associated with positive connotations in fashion. It was connected to nautical themes at first. The Breton stripe shirt, was first worn by French sailors in the 1850s, and then Coco Chanel popularized it in the 1920s, including it into her casual wear collection. And the rest is history.
Stripes come in many variations, the most popular being vertical or horizontal. Vertical stripes are known for their slimming effect, making them a really good choice for pants and dresses. I personally prefer this for bottoms and a full outfit. This happens to be my favorite. Horizonal stripes, create the illusion of width, which can be flattering if you are very slender. This would probably work more on me for my upper body alone.
Stripes are visually interesting and can elevate a plain outfit in just the right way. It can be dressed up or down for causal or formal occasions. It is definitely adaptable and therefore remains a relevant pattern in fashion.
Stripes can come in different color combinations; my personal favorite being blue and white, or beige and white. Black and white can be a little bit harsh on my skin tone. The stripes pattern is used in high-end fashion houses, and it is also a timeless pattern that will never go out of style. So don’t be afraid to incorporate a couple of stripe pieces in your wardrobe! ||
